No. 44 of 106 Things We Do For Clients
Show you how to access your statements and other information online.
The days of calling your investment advisor and requesting a current portfolio report are over. Today almost every investment advisor will give you online access to your custodial accounts, and more importantly, your performance reports. Performance reporting is rarely done by the custodian (TD Ameritrade, Schwab, Fidelity, etc.). Rather, it is a separate online site that aggregates all your investment data from the custodian into easy-to-read tables, charts, and graphs. They will give you information like the last 1-, 3-, 5-, and 10-year returns of the entire portfolio and each holding. You can compare the performance of the whole portfolio or each asset class to an equivalent benchmark or index, like the Consumer Price Index (inflation). And the best part is this data is available to you 24/7. There is no need to ever have to wade through a phone tree or wait for a report to be snail mailed or emailed to you.
